Play Therapy & BEhaviour Mechanics
Workshop Description
This two-day workshop introduces a structured, psychology-informed approach to assessment and behaviour change, using live case studies to show the work in real time. Participants observe full assessments and progressive intervention with dogs presenting with severe problem behaviours, including separation anxiety, human aggression, dog-to-dog aggression, excessive barking, and resource guarding.
Rather than relying on theory alone, the workshop allows students to watch cases unfold from first assessment through to ongoing work, providing rare insight into decision-making, adaptation, and progression as behaviour changes over time.
A central component of the workshop is the introduction of Play Therapy as both an assessment and modification tool. Play Therapy is structured into practical assessment exercises and explored through three distinct frameworks: Free Play, Release Play (David Levey), and Filial Play Therapy. Participants learn how different styles of play reveal emotional state, coping strategies, and relational patterns, and how these can be used to inform effective intervention.
The workshop places strong emphasis on behaviour mechanics and their impact on efficacy. Particular focus is given to precise hand mechanics with toys and treats, body positioning, movement patterns, and timing. These seemingly small details are examined in depth to demonstrate how technical accuracy can dramatically alter outcomes, improve clarity for the dog, and increase the reliability of training and behaviour change.
Throughout, the workshop bridges psychology, mechanics, and practical application, offering a clear, observable demonstration of how skilled handling and structured assessment can shift even complex behavioural presentations
Client Reviews
“I first saw Jo-Rosie speak years ago at her predation conference, and I’ll never forget the lightbulb moment I had that day. Since then, I’ve been a huge fan of her teaching style, her ability to communicate complex ideas with clarity, and the depth of her knowledge.
Having worked in various roles across the dog training industry, including as a trainer and detection dog handler, I’ve come across many educators, but Jo-Rosie stands out. Her ability to make you rethink things you thought you understood is nothing short of remarkable. She brings a level of insight and perspective that consistently sparks those “ah-ha” moments, and what’s even more surprising is how many people in the industry haven’t yet grasped what she teaches so clearly.
I’ve had the privilege of learning from and working alongside some of the best trainers in the world, and Jo is right up there. If you take the time to truly listen to what she says, it will change the way you train, think, and connect with dogs.”

“I attended the two-day Human Aggression workshop, and it exceeded my expectations in every way. Jo worked through five case studies, taking detailed histories and assessing each dog in real time on the first day. On day two, we returned to those same dogs, where she began working them and clearly demonstrated how to progress each case.
Hands down, this was the best workshop I have ever attended. Jo is exceptionally knowledgeable, and her assessments of the dogs were absolutely spot on. She narrated her thought process throughout, explaining not only what she was doing, but why, which made the learning incredibly valuable.
I was also fortunate enough to have my dog included as a case study, and Jo read him perfectly. It was fascinating to observe the subtle nuances in handling that can significantly influence a dog’s behaviour, and how to counteract them effectively.
I would highly recommend this workshop to any trainer or behaviourist who wants to work with dogs. A truly five-star experience.”

“Working with The JRH Academy has transformed the way I look at dog behaviour and has helped my confidence grow in ways which I was ever so desperately searching for!”
— Tierny Odonavan
“I dont know how to sum up what I have learnt from Jo-Rosie. She has revolutionised how I see and interact with dogs. She is the UK’s very very best when it comes to behaviour, possibly the world’s best. If you havent seen her - you need to.“

“She has empowered me to work into the centre of problems where previously it would take months to get in. Finally I feel like I have the structure and the tools to get the job done in a way my clients really value, whilst maintaining the dogs welfare at the centre. These in-person workshops are a total turning point. Before I attended I heard others speak about them but I never expected them to blow me away like they have. Total game-changer”
